Biography

Marc-Antoine Berthod studied sociology and anthropology at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and obtained his Ph.D in 2003 at the Institute of Ethnology, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Sociology of the University of Geneva and then taught for a couple of years at the Institute Kurt Bösch (Sion, Switzerland) for the European Master of palliative care and thanatology. From 2003 to 2006, he was visiting scholar at the Department of Anthropology of the Graduate Center, City University of New York. From 2006 to 2009, he was director of the research institute of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland in Sion (Valais), department of Health and Social Work. Since March 2009, he is full professor at the School of Social Work and Health Lausanne (HETSL) at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland. His research interests and main publications focus on death, dying and bereavement; assisted suicide; palliative care and ageing; rituals and community life within institutions.
